Today in our “Meet the Agent” series we get to know Joann Welch of CENTURY 21 Adams & Barnes in Monrovia, CA. Joann is easily one of the most enthusiastic System members we’ve met. You will feel her passion and energy while reading this Q&A. Thank you for starting our morning off right, Joann!

C21: You grew up working in a family restaurant. What skills from that work experience have made you a better realtor?

JW: Good Morning CENTURY 21! How great to meet you all! Working in our family restaurant helped me to develop relationships with customers; which has helped me to be a better realtor today. When it comes to understanding what clients are looking for in a home when buying or when selling, mostly though to understand people service, compassion, patience and willingness.

C21: You were involved with the Pasadena Showcase House for seven years. Tell us more about that.

JW: I set a goal to design interior and exterior wrought iron furniture and accessories and wanted to sell my designs to stores and work with interior designers and landscape designers. I had submitted my designs to a few and interviewed to participate in the Pasadena Showcase House Market place. The response was amazing from store owners, clients, and designers. I had been chosen to collaborate in the first year with both a landscape architect and an interior designer along with having a space in their Market Place. I have always had a passion for decorating and design elements from a very young age.

C21: How did you first get into real estate?

JW: The opportunity first came in the mortgage side of real estate processing loans, underwriting then funding which truly helped me to understand what it takes to take a transaction from A -Z . Since I love people and have a passion for design, decorating, and homes, I decided to combine them all together and pursue a career in real estate. I love what I do!

C21: Do you remember your first sale?

JW: Oh Absolutley! A lovely traditional 3 bedroom, 2 bath home in North West Pasadena and it was wonderful that I was able to stage this family’s home entirely with some of their personal belongings. It was fun coming together with the sellers and their children to get the house ready. It was a success and has lead me to working side by side with all my clients!

C21: When you bought your first home, what made you fall in love it?

JW: I loved the potential, the hands on and the progression of it becoming our home.

C21: When did you join the CENTURY 21 System and what brought you to us?

JW: In January 2010 after working with two boutique brokerages I felt it was time to move on to a solid company with a solid brand, familial, helpful and with a lot to offer their representatives. When I did decide to make the move I interviewed companies rather than companies interviewing me; I wanted to make sure it would be a perfect fit. CENTURY 21 has much to offer their representatives; specifically the company that I work with is wonderful. My broker and my general manager are both hands on and very supportive. It takes a great team effort to be successful!

C21: Your area of focus is Monrovia, California. What makes this real estate market special and unique?

JW: Monrovia has a lot to offer. It is a small town with a big heart and so many types of architecture – craftsman homes to beautiful Victorians. Although our office is based in Monrovia, I grew up in the San Gabriel Valley and this opportunity has given me the ability to get to know all the different communities in our surrounding areas, including the greater Los Angeles area, and the San Bernardino County communities. This has helped me better understand a client’s needs when buying or selling a home.

C21: If I had only one day in Monrovia, what are the three things I must see/do?

JW: Monrovia has so many different things to offer, but if I was suggesting three “must do’s” (and since I love the outdoors) they would be a hike up to the Falls, Library Park and Myrtle Avenue. However, on Friday evenings there is a family street fair with fun activities and with quaint shops, wonderful restaurants and a movie theater. There is something to do for everyone!

C21: How do you maintain relationships with clients after they buy a home? It could many several years before they are ready to move again.

JW: Friendship, whether buying or selling.

C21: How important are referrals?

JW: I had mentioned knowing how to take a transaction from A-Z and I never say beginning to end because there is no end. The biggest compliment I can receive is when I have performed an excellent job and my clients are happy, so happy that they tell their family and friends. It’s an incredible circle!

C21: Name the three qualities necessary to succeed in real estate.

JW:  1) Honesty

2) Being Communicative

3) Strength

4) Perseverance

I know that was four, however, I think all of those are very important.

C21: Our company mantra is “Smarter. Bolder. Faster.” How do you embody the mantra in your day-to-day work?

JW: I love our mantra!

Smarter - always taking every opportunity to better myself so I can better serve my clients; which means being aware and knowledgeable about the market.

Bolder - more of the ability to be creative.

Faster - I have always been pretty fast and now with the tools available through CENTURY 21, I can be even faster.

C21: If you could give one piece of advice to a young person starting out in the real estate business, what would it be?

JW: Go with your gut instincts. Be yourself. Be honest. Be patient. Most importantly though, be yourself. Don’t be someone in front of your clients and someone else when they turn their backs. Stand behind the motto, “Treat people the way you want to be treated.”

C21: When you’re not working, how do you like to spend your free time?

JW: I love being outdoors, cooking, and spending time with my children, husband, and our dogs. I try and combine them all, so lots of BBQ-ing and camping, with some surfing at the beach together as a family.

C21: Is there anything else you’d like our readers to know about you, your office or your local area?

JW: Working with CENTURY 21 is an excellent opportunity! CENTURY 21 helps their representatives in the field with online support, marketing, and tools that we need to succeed. CENTURY 21 Adams & Barnes, the office I work with, is great and being around positive people makes me very proud to be an associate.
