This week in our “Meet the Agent” series we chat with Geraldine about that first purchase and how real estate has changed since she took her first class 38 years ago.
C21: How did you first get into real estate?
GA: Our next door neighbor was an owner of a real estate company and asked my mother if she’d like to become an agent. She wasn’t interested, but suggested I should consider it. Shortly after that I was taking real estate classes – 38 years ago!
C21: When you bought your first home, what made you fall in love it?
GA: The reason I bought my first home was so I could sell those sellers another home. I actually wasn’t in the market for a house, but it turned out to be a great investment for me.
C21: What was the first big furniture purchase you made for the place?
GA: The first purchase I made was a dining room set and I am still using that very first set!
C21: You have worked in real estate for over 30 years. What is the biggest change in the industry since you first began your career?
GA: When I first we started we used manual typewriters with carbon paper to have seven copies of sales contracts. We used to wait every day for the postman to come so we could get the “hot sheets” to update us on the market.
C21: You specialize in the Buffalo, NY area. What makes this a great place to purchase a home?
GA: Buffalo and the western New York area is a beautiful place to live. We have wonderful attractions – the great Niagra Falls, the Buffalo Philharominc Orchestra, fabulous theater, excellent food and renowned schools and universities.
C21: The Erie County Fair is currently going on. What is your favorite ride or booth to visit?
GA: The fair is a blast and I’m always impressed by the concerts and all the food! It’s a busy time of year for me right now, so I haven’t been able to enjoy it as much as I would like.
C21: The Buffalo Bills are the city’s NFL team. What’s your perfect game day dish?
GA: I know you must think I’m going to say Buffalo wings, since I live in Buffalo, but my absolute favorite is my mom’s pasta with meatballs.
C21: What is your one tip for hosting a memorable open house?
GA: Always greet your visitors and introduce yourself. If you enjoy being there and you know your product, people will remember you. I actually have people coming to my open houses just to say hello and talk to me about the market.
C21: Our company mantra is “Smarter. Bolder. Faster.” How do you embody the mantra in your day-to-day work as an agent?
GA: I know my market. I’m prepared and always available to answer questions. I keep new technology right at my fingertips to stay a step ahead of the competition.
C21: When you’re not working, how do you like to spend your free time?
GA: I read a quote that sums up my feelings about my free time, “You know you have achieved success when you don’t know whether what you’re doing is work or play.” My passion for this business blurs the line between work and play.
